- 19th Century:
George H. Borrow, a British writer (1801-1881) was a lover of words. He traveled to Spain and he met people who could not read The Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.
The Chef was so inspired by Borrow's commitment to the Bible Society that he created alphabets with pasta. In the days afterwards, sopa de letras (soup of letters) was made to feed the people and help them with literacy.
20th Century:
In the 1930's Campbell's Soup Company made their first alphabet soup.
In 1968 -1971 Norman E. Gibat owned and managed his printing business. He published the first word search puzzle in his Oklahoma, Selenby Digest. "I was looking for something that would be easy for people to work while they were waiting in line at the grocery store," Gibet said.
21st Century:
In 2014, honoring the late Governor Cyril Emmanuel King, USVI, "Sopas de Letras" Kings Word Search Contest is the first live, in person word search contest that is celebrating the unique history of the word search puzzle by holding "Minnie" events in public schools and convalescent homes. The grand event is held during literacy month in September. The contest awards the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners with cash. The first place winner is crowned Word Search King for that year! Live contests are being held in Houston and surrounding areas.
